Sponch Makhethe

South Africa

Sponch Makhekhe, whose real name is Munty Derrick Maseko, is a musician hailing from Mzimhlophe in Soweto, South Africa. The name Sponch Makhekhe was given to him by his grandmother after he suffered burns from hot water in a kettle while attempting to grab sponge cakes placed on top of a kitchen counter when he was a child. His friends on the streets embraced the name, and he chose to adopt it as he sought a stage name for his musical career.
